Volleyball Sand

BESTSAND™

In beach volleyball, there are two teams of two players, a net and sand — 300 to 350 tons of sand depending on the location. That makes sand one of the most important features of the sport. It must provide firm footing without compacting, it must be completely free of organic material, and it must stand up to the elements. Only then can it provide the proper foundation for quick reactions, diving digs and epic spikes.

Bring the Beach to Your Backyard with BESTSAND VB

Covia’s BESTSAND volleyball sand offers the consistent texture, quality and purity you need for perfect play on both indoor and outdoor courts. It’s why volleyball experts throughout the US have been calling on us for decades.

Advantages
Clean and Consistent
Excellent Drainage

Sand shape is composed of two components: sphericity and angularity. Sphericity describes how closely a grain of sand resembles a sphere. Angularity describes whether a grain of sand has sharp or smooth edges. These characteristics play an important role in determining the physical properties of a bed of sand. For example, highly angular sand particles are more prone to compaction. And fully rounded, mostly spherical sand particles produce a loose, slippery surface.

BESTSAND VB sand features subangular or subround particles, which resists compaction over time. This increases the softness of the sand but still provides firm, secure footing. Our subangular sand is also less abrasive than angular grains, reducing skin irritation and increasing playability.

Applications:

Excellent sand for use in indoor/outdoor volleyball arenas and courts

Low dust

Dust on the volleyball court is more than a nuisance — it can be harmful to players. Using sand with a low dust profile is imperative.

Low glare

Whether the game unfolds under the sun or artificial lights, glare can cause discomfort and affect the game experience. Anti-glare measures are critical for optimal volleyball play.

Firm footing

Sand is typically 18 inches deep on most volleyball courts, but the sand must provide firm, secure footing to help athletes avoid injury.

No crusting

Elevated levels of silt and/or clay particles can cause crusting, which can affect play dynamics and player comfort. Look for sand with low crusting potential.

Soft landings

Digging is synonymous with beach volleyball, so players expect to hit the sand. This requires the perfect combination of firmness to react quickly and softness to cushion the fall.

Non-stick

No player wants to be covered in sand, even if they’re sweating profusely. Small, smooth sand grains ensure that the particles fall right off the skin.

Clean, High-Purity Sand for Safe, Consistent Play

Volleyball sand must be free of organic particles, which can transfer color to the skin and cause unsightly staining. It should also be naturally weathered and not derived from crushed rocks. And it should be devoid of shells, coral or other rough-edged debris that can cause skin injuries.

BESTSAND VB sand always provides a consistent texture and quality without unwanted contaminants. Its off-white color reduces glare, yet still creates an aesthetically pleasing appearance that enhances competitive and casual play.

Excellent Drainage to Resist Crusting

Drainage is essential for a successful volleyball court. In addition to installing a proper drainage system under the court, equipped with PVC drainpipe, gravel and nonwoven fabric, court designers select a sand that drains well and resists crusting. A good sand will drain over 20 inches an hour and will be free of fine clay particles that stick together on the surface of the sand.

BESTSAND VB sand is washed and cleaned to provide a high-quality, silt- and clay-free surface. It also features subangular particles, sized between 1.0 mm and 0.15 mm in diameter. This results in a highly playable court that drains well, avoids crusting and provides firmness without easily compacting after sustained use.
